It is a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Natal. The breeze from the ocean about a mile away dances through the large balcony where hammocks swing, then between the heavy glass sliding doors into the living room where Joe and I are still visiting with Frederick*, a young man who has been part of our lives for several years. The three of us are talking about some of the challenges he is facing, searching for the Lord’s will.
Joe leaves us for a moment, and Frederick and I go out onto the balcony. We settle into a couple of plastic chairs, laughing, then continue our conversation. I have no idea what I said when, without warning, Frederick falls out of his chair and begins writhing on the floor.
Demons manifesting!
Why here? No idea, as I begin praying, using the name of Jesus and the power of His blood to cast them out.

His body stops writhing. Suddenly more guttural sounds as he tries to stand, attempting to get to the balcony wall, so the demons could make him jump.
I gather my strength to pull him back down onto the floor and yell for Joe. He comes running, sees the situation, grabs Frederick! The two of us hold him down as we pray, casting out the demons.

I have no idea how many we cast out. I only know that Frederick’s eyes gradually clear, his face and body relax, and the demons are gone.
The three of us continue sitting on the verandah floor, talking and praying.
Frederic has no idea how and when those demons entered his body. We pray together for wisdom and understanding. As we talk, gradually we come to an understanding….
Eventually, our bodies remind us that the tile floor is hard; the clock reminds Frederick he has other commitments. We get up off the floor, hug, pray again, and Frederick leaves.
Joe and I look at each other as we go to the big sofa in the living room, where we collapse.

What is happening in Brazil?
What is happening in the US?
What – demons? Why – who has opened the door for them?

People who turn their backs on God leave a void in their spirits where demons can come in.
.Greed, love of power become more important than honesty and integrity before God and man. Flagrant lies (that can be proven to be lies) are told in the highest echelons of society.
Sad similarities between the two nations where I am a citizen here on earth.

Many North and South Americans no longer have a hunger to study and obey God’s Word.
Whenever people stop following God’s Word, they also stop praying for the nation’s leaders. Today, the US and Brazil are in serious trouble Angry socialists (using fraud, threats and violence) are attempting to control the governments’ elections.
I look – and cannot believe what I am seeing and hearing, as these two nations writhe on the floor of the world’s balcony.

So – what are you and I going to do about it? Do we have a choice?

WE ARE AT SPIRITUAL WAR and no one has an excuse to not go into this battle
Here are our first instructions.
Paul wrote in Ephesians 6
“10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

Let’s check this out!
OK – We are battling against the forces of evil in the world around us and in the heavens. OUCH! How can I battle that? Obviously, guns won’t do it!

Paul gives us the rules:

14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist [holding everything together], with the breastplate of righteousness in place [protecting our hearts],
15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace [sandals that fit and protect our feet.]
16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one [rejection, pain, etc]
17 Take the helmet of salvation [protecting us from all those lies telling us we cannot do it, we are not worthy] and the sword of the Spirit [this can pierce!], which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

This requires preparation on our part. Not physical exercises to keep our bodies limber: but, conscious choices to obey God in our daily lives
When we do that, we have authority in battle.

If you don’t have that authority it isn’t too late to get it.
Example? Years ago, I didn’t know about demons. When they started manifesting themselves in people around me, I learned fast that with the name of Jesus and the power of His blood, they HAD to leave. It wasn’t my power. I asked for God’s power to control those demons…. And He gave it.

When we choose to obey Him, He keeps His promises to us, giving us authority for battle – immediately.

Two quick addendums before I end this.
-the Roman soldiers had NOTHING to cover their backs, except for the other soldiers. Which means NO RETREAT.
– one doesn’t stop fighting when one gets tired.

First, know with clarity Whom you are obeying
Look around you. What do you see wrong? Start praying to break that power, keep on praying – including fasting gives one more strong weapon .
If there is something physical you can do e.g. vote, share love and food, speak the truth, don’t hedge – DO IT!

So you don’t know how to do “spiritual battle”?
LEARN! Ask some experienced soldiers around you and get from them the info and the backup info from God’s Word.

When Frederik fell writhing to the floor in no way were we going to let those demons win that battle! We love Frederick.
Apply that illustration to our nations.

Are we going to do spiritual battle against those demons who are using people to destroy where we live???

I wonder: if Joe and I had grown tired of casting out demons from Frederic, if we’d said “forget this. It’s not worth the trouble…
I wonder what would have happened if we had withdrawn our authority?
Would the demons have turned on us?
